How to Pick Exterior Paint Colors for Your Home?

We understand how overwhelming it can be to pick exterior paint colors for your home. Scrolling through Pinterest, searching Houzz, looking at Instagram…the options are endless. Today, we want to give you some practical tips to help you pick exterior paint colors for your home.

First and foremost, if your home as stone or brick areas that aren’t going to be painted, those will play a big role in determining your exterior home colors. To do this successfully, you’ll want to determine the “undertones” of those natural materials.  Undertones can range from pink-beige to blue-gray to taupe.  No matter what the undertones are, you need to know them so you can design your paint color to coordinate. If you don’t your exterior will look like a hodgepodge of clashing colors.

Next, we typically advise you to go with more muted colors in your home. Bright colors can be fun, but we typically advise you pick neutral shades. In choosing colors, a subtle change can make a big difference when it’s covering your whole house.

If you’re picking white (like in the home shown here), you won’t want to pick an actual white. Colors show up much brighter outside when they are outside. Most of the pretty white homes you’ll see on Instagram are actually a beige, “greige”, or cream color.

Finally, if you’re a fan of cool colors, you’re probably going to want to pick a much “warmer” color than you would expect. Natural sunlight has a very cool color temperature to it.  It naturally will “cool down” any color that you see outside, so you need to compensate by picking a color that’s much warmer than you’d expect.
