For a Home’s Exterior, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark — Before & After Project

When it comes to choosing a new exterior paint color for your home, here’s some advice from experienced Colorado Springs house painters: don’t be afraid of the dark.

While it’s true that some homes may look their best painted a lighter shade, there are just as many homes that “disappear” in pale hues. These are homes that are begging for a richer, deeper shade of exterior paint to really make them pop.

In this video, you’ll see a real-world example of what we’re talking about. This is a home in the Colorado Springs area for which we recently completed an exterior paint job.

In the “before” pictures, you’ll see that the home was painted a soft, pale shade between white and beige. This is a common paint color for home exteriors, because it’s neutral and clean.

As you can see, there was nothing glaringly “wrong” with the home’s color before it was repainted. However, there was nothing extraordinary about it, either. It was the kind of home you might drive past without noticing it, simply because it was playing by some old, outdated rules about keeping exterior paint colors quiet.

The homeowners opted for a warm, dusky shade on the brown spectrum, and wow, what a difference it made! Check out the “after” pictures in the video.

This home gained a welcoming, friendly aspect by going darker. This is the opposite of what many homeowners fear: that a darker color will make their home’s exterior look bleak and depressing. As you can see, that’s not always true.

One of the reasons we loved the end result of this particular project was because the new exterior paint color made this home feel more like a true Colorado Springs home. Its smoky, earthy shade fits with the region’s rustic, mountainous character. The bones of the home helped that along. A sharply peaked roofline is suggestive of mountains and wooden mountain chalets, and really helped this color work.

This is not to say that every home in Colorado Springs should be painted brown. While the character of a region can be an influential factor in how to paint a home’s exterior, other factors should also be considered. For example: the character of the immediate neighborhood, the personality and lifestyle of the homeowner, the home’s landscaping, roof color, color of fixed architectural elements (like stone or brick), architectural style, size, and more.

Making a dramatic change to the color of your home’s exterior is a big decision. You may feel more confident in your choice if you enroll the help of a professional Colorado Springs painting contractor. At Wright Prime and Paint, we’re always happy to consult on color choices. Choosing color is the point where transformations are launched. There’s something magical there, and we love being a part of it.
