Colorado Springs Exterior Paint Colors: A Celebration of Greige

We don’t know exactly when the word “greige” emerged to describe a paint color between beige and grey. Maybe in the past five years? It’s not a local phenomenon, exclusive to painting contractors in Colorado Springs. It’s a nationwide trend. All we know is, there’s been an uptick in requests for shades of “greige” for both interior and exterior paint projects, and with good reason.

An Old-Fashioned Look

Beige has been a default paint color for decades – and that’s precisely why many of today’s homeowners are steering away from it.

Beige is an unoffensive color. It’s light, neutral, and can pair with pretty much any other accent color, which speaks to the longevity of its popularity.

However, because beige has been a go-to color for so many years, present generations of homeowners perceive it as “dated.” For them, beige was a shade of choice to their parents and grandparents. Just as an overabundance of orange and russet shades in home décor eventually came to look so undeniably ‘70s, beige is now beginning to look old-fashioned, too.

A Little Grey Does a Lot

But it turns out, when you add a touch of grey to beige, you get a shade that’s just as versatile as beige, but with a sleek, more modern feel.

Greige has the added attraction of being easier on the eye in daylight than beige. When warm sunlight meets with the warm undertone of a beige home exterior, the effect is warmth-on-warmth. It’s not enough to blind anybody, but here’s the thing: when you look at a beige exterior in the afternoon sun side-by-side with brilliant daylight against greige, you will experience a difference. Greige is softer. Its cool undertones counterbalance the inherent warmth of daylight, and the effect is one of soothing harmony.
