When you live in Colorado Springs, painting the interior of your house may seem unimportant. We enjoy gorgeous views and rich color palettes just driving down the road. For that reason, you might wonder, “should it matter what color I paint the inside of my home?” Maybe that’s why the shades in your Colorado Springs home are neutral. To your mind, nothing can beat the beauty of our natural surroundings.

But there are other reasons homeowners like to keep their interior paint colors neutral. Maybe you enjoy periodic redecorating and want to be sure your walls never clash with your latest throw pillows. Or maybe you own a vacation or mid-term rental property in Colorado Springs and feel that neutral colors are a safer bet when you’re trying to please a variety of guests.

Having met so many of you throughout the Colorado Springs area, we know that some of you find a neutral palette more serene. It helps you unwind after a long workday. And some of you have told us that bold color just isn’t your style. You consider yourself classic and understated, and you want your home to reflect that.

You look around at the white, cream, beige and eggshell rooms you painted 20 or 30 years ago and say, “why bother to change?”

Well, for starters, there’s the fact that walls take a beating. There’s no way to avoid it.

You carry the groceries in from the garage and they scuff the kitchen wall on the way to the counter.

You rearrange your furniture, or have furniture hauled in and hauled out, and you get dings and scrapes.

You hang a picture, then move it. You’re left with a nail hole, and maybe even an outline of the picture, either from the dust that’s settled around the frame, or a shocking bright spot that reveals just how much the surrounding paint has faded over the years.

If you’ve been living with the same paint for a while, there’s a good chance you could use a fresh coat.

But what we really want to talk about here is loving and living with neutrals, and how having the courage to make a subtle change can make you fall in love with your home all over again.

We recently completed an interior paint job here in Colorado Springs where the house was finished in neutral shades at every turn. We’re sharing the before and after results in this video because we want to show you how a painting contractor can bring a “wow” factor to your home without making a dramatic change. You might think subtle tweaks are hardly worth it, but we think you’ll change your mind when you look at these results.

Home Interior Before

Restoritive Interior Paint After!

This video shows three ways you can make your home sing again, while still remaining true to a neutral palette.

  • Use a coordinating darker shade to make architectural details pop. For example, if you have built-in bookcases, niches, or a fireplace surround that are painted the same color as the rest of the room, make those special features stand out by going a tad darker. It’s a classy effect!
  • Go from warm neutral to cool neutral. To give your interior some variety, choose a warm neutral for some rooms (like the froth on an espresso) and a cool neutral for others (like the grayish-beige of an ocean wave cap at sunset).

A savvy house painter can help you recognize which rooms in your home might benefit from a cooler shade of neutral, based on the amount and direction of natural light that streams in.

Warm neutrals enjoyed a long period of popularity from the 1970s through the ‘90s, and many rich, beautiful shades on the cusp of gray and beige were ignored. Now they’ve been discovered and they’re growing in popularity. They’ve even earned their own moniker: “greige.”

  • Go bold with just one feature wall. No one is asking you to take the leap from eggshell to deep purple here, but it’s worth putting a toe just outside your comfort zone.

In this video, you’ll see what one gorgeous teal wall did for an otherwise neutral bedroom. This is what you’ll hear us Colorado Springs painters call a “feature wall.” It’s a way of inviting a pop of color into a room without overwhelming the space and suffocating the people in it.

Feature walls are a great choice for that wall behind the headboard of your bed. It gives a stunning impression upon entering the bedroom, but as you rest in bed, the walls surrounding you relax you with their tamer hue.

Colorado Springs, we respect your love of neutral interior house paint colors. They allow for decorating versatility and can be extremely soothing.

But loving those neutrals shouldn’t mean you have to miss out on the thrill of a professional paint job. We’ve never met anyone who said they hate the effect of fresh paint. When it’s done right, it makes everybody happy. And at Wright Prime & Paint, we do it right every time. We won’t steer you wrong.
