Over the past two years, there has been a national trend toward cooler shades for exterior house paint, including right here in the Colorado Springs area.
We’ve seen our fair share of dated-looking homes with exterior paint colors that spoke of an earlier decade, like the russets of the 1970s, or pale terra cotta teetering on the edge of pink from the ‘80s and ‘90s, all of which were beautifully transformed and modernized with cooler, more contemporary undertones.
Being Cool Isn’t Everything
However, a warmer palette still has its place here in the 2020’s, especially when the warmth is subtle rather than syrupy. A lot depends on the style of the home, its natural surroundings, and the way sunlight hits the house at different times of the day.
We recently painted the exterior of a home in the Colorado Springs area with charming angles and diagonal siding that lent character. And yet, with so much going for it, the house was somehow invisible. You could drive by it every day, year after year, and never even notice it was there.
It was washed out by a pale grayish-white shade that failed to show off its attractive, homey features.

When Warm Works
In this case, a sweet shade of buttercream juxtaposed against clean white trim really made the home pop. Now, it’s as cute as a cupcake, but with just enough restraint to maintain a sense of “less-is-more” elegance.
Here, moving away from cool and colorless toward warm and welcoming was the right move.
